Get a Look at the FAN Club in Action at the February Meeting

Join us for our February 2026 meeting, where well-known genealogy speaker Miles Meyer will share “Who’s Leo? – an unknown relative, census records, and the FAN method.”

Description:

If you have been researching genealogy for a while you may have heard of the FAN method. FAN stands for Friends, Acquaintances and Neighbors. This technique looks at those living nearby on the census, investigating associated people on various records, and who is listed on other records.

This presentation traces the research of an unknown family member through various records demonstrating how the information in census records may be misleading, why it is necessary to fully evaluate information in multiple record types, and why it is important to look at nearby families to resolve family mysteries. It will focus on one individual and how a detailed investigation of the information led to multiple discoveries resolving how that person was related to the family in question. Problems that will be discussed include detailed census evaluation, poor enumeration data, poor indexing, the FAN method, multiple marriages, cemetery and newspaper research, and resolving the missing 1890 census. (This presentation will be given at RootsTech 2026 in Salt Lake City.)

WHEN: Sunday, 15 February 2026 – NOTE DATE CHANGE
TIME: 4:30 p.m. SLT (same as Pacific Time)
WHERE: The Barn  SLurl

A brief business meeting will be held before the speaker’s presentation.

Genealogists of all levels are welcome at our meetings. You do not need to be a member of the SLVGS to attend, but we’d love it if you’d join!

Time: 4:30–6:00 p.m. SLT (same as Pacific Time)

Got skeletons in your closet? Bring them along! All souls are welcome. Bring a friend, a fellow genealogist, or a spirit who just can’t rest until they’re properly sourced and cited.

Don’t ghost us! Join the fun and make this a night to remember the dearly (and not-so-dearly) departed!

Share What’s on Your Mind at the October Meeting

At our July 2025 meeting, we explored how uncovering family history can affect our emotional and physical well-being. The discussion made it clear that genealogists need a safe and supportive space to discuss all aspects of family history—both the discoveries that inspire us and the ones that challenge us.

To meet that need, the Second Life Virtual Genealogical Society (SLVGS) will now hold open group discussions every other month.

Our October meeting will be one of these open sessions: an opportunity to share, listen, and learn together. Bring whatever genealogy-related topics are on your mind, such as:

    • Unexpected genetic health results
    • NPE discoveries or adoption stories
    • Grief and loss in family research
    • Cognitive issues or memory care
    • How to share sensitive findings with family members or clients
    • Or even that stubborn brick wall that’s been holding up your research!

Our members come from diverse backgrounds and experience levels, from curious beginners to seasoned professionals. Whether you want to talk through a tough discovery or get fresh ideas for your research, you’ll find a welcoming community ready to help!

    WHEN: Sunday, 12 October 2025
TIME: 4:30 p.m. SLT (same as Pacific Time)

A brief business meeting will be held before the speaker’s presentation.
